Grace Notes Weblog

I’ll be posting here about music and lessons and practicing; saxophone and clarinet lessons; reeds; music notation; musical events; and favorite songs.

Speaking of favorite songs, when Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz @ Lincoln Center Orchestra were in Portland earlier this month, I heard them play this song; Braggin’ in Brass by Duke Ellington.

This is a 29-second clip from the song. As the title implies, it features quick-moving and challenging melodic lines in both the trumpet and the trombone sections. Double-tonguing is a given here. As you listen you will hear the trombones play the sixteenth-note-laden line, with the sixteenth notes passing among the three section players, two at a time!

I had not heard of this Ellington tune until J@LCO played it. Thanks, Wynton, for turning me on to a barnburner of a song. What fave song has been burning up your playlist lately? Share a title and artist with a comment below.
