I was enjoying a beautiful evening, hiking in my neighborhood park, following a trail to the summit of this city’s own volcano(!). As I neared the top of the trail, I heard the sound of a saxophone, fluttering through the pines and cedars.
A talented fellow was practicing his tenor sax as his friends played frisbee nearby. A couple were cozied up on a blanket a little further away. And the benches overlooking the view of the city were full of people enjoying the pending sunset accompanied by dominant seventh chords and jazz patterns.
Hearing other musicians play always has the effect of inspiring me to practice. I rested on a bench and listened to his chords and scales and licks. Then, motivated to get my horn out, I took a brisk walk back home.

Here is one of my students, Brian, playing at Crater Lake. He takes every opportunity to play outside and share his music!
