The Portland Gay Symphonic Band opens its 2008-2009 season with Spirits, a musical séance that will perform music of a spiritual nature.
From the website: “This first performance in the Season of Illusions welcomes spirits new and old. The English word “spirit” comes from the Latin “spiritus” (breath). This musical séance will attempt to find a connection between life and the after-life, including dramatic visual art as well. Major works performed include Robert W. Smith’s monumental Symphony No. 1 ‘The Divine Comedy’, and Eric Whitacre’s Ghost Train.”

I’ll be playing both alto and soprano saxophones in this concert. The music is exciting, spooky, dramatic, and emotional. You will feel jubilant, forlorn, fearless, glorious, reckless, and compassionate. The concert is the Saturday before Halloween, October 25, 2008, 8 PM. You can buy tickets from any band member or online through Brown Paper Tickets.
Listen to snippets of the music we will be performing. I’ve created an audio file that contains segments of three songs we’ll be playing: The beginning of Ghost Train, a little bit from Danny Elfman’s Music for a Darkened Theatre, and thirdly, the start of Allerseelen (All Soul’s Day). Enjoy!
