After I got through my first 2-3 years of playing the viola, when I stopped squeaking and could generally play in tune, I really loved playing whenever I could. However, I didn't fully realize the fierce joy that playing could bring until I was in 7th grade. It was my first time in All State Orchestra in Maryland. We played several pieces, but the only one I remember was the New World Symphony. We were playing on a wooden stage and I was in the first stand, right under the directors baton and next to the 2nd chair 'cello. The vibrations from the stage and the swelling of all the music around me was amazing! I felt as if I could swoon or float as the french horns supported a wonderful wall of sound behind me. After that week, my parents no longer needed to nag me to play, and I started joining any group that would have me. Yes, this does resonate with me.
